Initially, people in general did not believe in the efficacy of programs, which were dedicated to the leadership development.

This is because good leaders possess certain very strong and positive qualities, which mark them out from the crowd.

Beliefs about leadership development

This created the belief that leaders were born with their qualities. But thankfully, that is slowly getting eroded and a positive realization has set in, according to which, development of leadership skills is possible through correct training.

This has led several business and educational organizations to create leadership development programs. Though it’s feels good to know that even if you do not possess good leadership skills, you may be able to develop them; the process itself is not easy.

Developing of leadership involves change

Leadership development involves in depth changes in attitude and behavior. Now, since a person’s attitudes and behavior have been with him/ her for years, it would require rigorous training and role-playing exercises to create meaningful and lasting changes.

Development of leadership involves training which would help the participants develop qualities that should be ideally present in a leader. There are people who naturally possess qualities that make them better candidates for leadership development programs.

The other end of the spectrum

And then there are those who lie in the opposite end of the spectrum, that is, people who cannot or will not adopt the required skill or behavior-set.

So programs dedicated to the development of leadership should be designed keeping in mind that though Leadership development is possible, it cannot help everyone in the same way. Different people need varying levels and quality of training, to transform into leaders.
